Unshielded twisted pair cable (UTP) is used for voice communication and data networking. Several types of UTP cable are available including Category 5e (Cat5e) and Category 3 (Cat3). Category 5e cable is used for 1GB/100MB Ethernet networks and voice communications. Category 3 cable is primarily used for voice communication although it can also support 10MB Ethernet networks.
Within each UTP cable type are cable classifications such as CMR, CMX and Plenum. The cable classification is based on the application. CMR cable, also known as Riser cable, is standard use UTP cable for indoor applications. CMX cable is rated for outdoor applications where the cable is exposed for short distances. (CMX cable is not to be buried.) Plenum cable or CMP cable is used in a building's plenum space (cable and duct work area above a suspended ceiling) and meets strict fire code requirements.
