Twisted Pair Cable

Twisted pair cable is used for data networking and voice communication. Several types of twisted pair cable are available including Category 6 (Cat6), Category 5e (Cat5e) and Category 3 (Cat3).

Within each twisted pair cable type are cable classifications: CMR, CMX and Plenum. The cable classification is based on the application. CMR cable, also known as Riser cable, is standard use twisted pair cable for indoor applications. CMX cable is rated for outdoor applications where the cable is exposed for short distances. (CMX cable is not to be direct buried.) Plenum cable or CMP cable is used in a building's plenum space (cable and duct work area above a suspended ceiling) and meets strict fire code requirements.

Category 6 cable is the standard for Gigabit Ethernet data networks, legacy Fast Ethernet (100MB) and 10MB data networks, and voice communications networks.

Category 5e cable is used for voice communications and Gigabit/100MB/10MB Ethernet data networks. Select the correct cable classification for your application: CMR (riser), CMX (outdoor), or Plenum (plenum fire rated).

Category 3 cable is used for voice communications and 10MB Ethernet data networks.
